Player/Coach Mentoring
With origins from Greek mythology (Odysseus entrusted his son to an old man called Mentor), sport can benefit from the assigning of mentors to both athletes and coaches.
Businesses assign mentors to staff to help them reach their potential; the same can the applied in sport.
Mark Godwin, Director of eliteperformance, is a UKCC coach educator and works with a variety of athletes from numerous sports.
He says “Mentoring is an overlooked aspect in the sporting world. By applying simple strategies, both athletes and coaches can unlock their potential and achieve far more than they might have thought.”
Athletes and coaches face internal resistance’s and often need assistance to overcome what maybe holding them back. By assigning a mentor to the coach or athlete the individual can be guided and supported throughout the sporting process.
‘Mentoring involves guiding someone to discover his or her own unconscious competencies and overcome internal resistance's and interferences, through believing in the person and validating his or her positive intentions.’
